SEO 101: Link Building

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!
Dave Conklin from ProspectMX joins Ne0 and me to discuss link building basics. Why did this guy get to be the guest? Because his company made this super cute Link Building 101 poster (pdf). We managed to cover most of the techniques on this kitschy primer, but had enough left over that we might do a Part 2 to cover the rest.
The Handout
Seriously, this is frame-worthy. I’m going to get a big laminated version to put on the wall in my office.
Things we cover in this episode include:
- Press releases (for links) — pay attention as there are some good tips for not breaking your budget and how to know when you should use free services versus when it’s a good idea to use the paid services.
- Wikis and Social Sites
- Traditional Link Building — Cherry picking links, how to ask for links the right way, how to NOT ask for links, etc.
- Paid Links, Link Exchanges and Directories

I love the handout on link building 101. It’s printing out as I type. As someone who’s engaged in a lot of link building, this is a great outline of some important basics. Thanks!

Hey Carolyn,
I’m from the UK and I listen to you on SEO 101 all the time as I like the way you guys keep it informal and not too stuffy. Can I use the poster on my sites or am I only allowed to link to it? Either way, I just love your blog, at last someone who doesn’t try to treat SEO newbies (ish) as idiots who fall for every scam going.

Hey Mark,
The poster isn’t actually mine, it was created by ProspectMX (see this post). They’re pretty liberal with the use permissions, but I’m sure they’d like credit for the work ;)
Glad you enjoy the show!

Great, I wil use it and credit them. Btw, your podcasts would be even better if the two other guys wouldn’t leave it to you all the time to fill in the silence between the talk! :)
